Hyperemesis Gravidarum is NOT morning sickness!

So let’s be real clear. Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is not morning sickness. It’s not bad morning sickness. It’s not even really really bad morning sickness. It’s extreme. And so is its impact. The impact on your physical health is extreme, the impact on your mental health is extreme, the impact on your marriage, your children, your social life, your job, your finances? Extreme, extreme, extreme. Hyperemesis Gravidarum sucks. I feel for anybody who falls victim to it.
Thanks to Kate Middleton a lot more people now seem to be aware of the condition. Unlike Kate Middleton most of us don’t have around the clock help to manage life with this condition.
It is estimated that about 2 out of 100 women will suffer from HG. 2 out of 100 women will have their pregnancies ruined by this awful condition. Most of us look forward to one day falling pregnant. We look forward to glowing, growing and basking in the glory of creating new life. HG takes that away.
Just ask Sarah. Sarah suffered from HG from when she was only six weeks pregnant. “I can’t put into words just how much it ruined my pregnancy. There were stages where I considered ending my pregnancy as I felt I couldn’t go on. It doesn’t surprise me at all to hear that that’s what ends up happening in some HG cases.” Sarah has made the decision to have no more children due to the condition. Her obstetrician advised her that she would most likely have the condition again if she chose to have another pregnancy. “I wanted three children but I just can’t do it. I have no idea how I would manage to look after my child AND have to deal with HG again. It was hard enough to do it when I didn’t have a baby to care for. My husband was a wonderful help the first time around but we all agree that we couldn’t go through it again.” Sarah now does her best to educate other women on how debilitating the condition can be. “I was lucky to have friends who understood how bad HG is, but a lot of my family didn’t get it. They thought I just needed to have some ginger and toughen up. It was infuriating. I wouldn’t wish this condition on my worst enemy. I mean, I WOULD wish it on Donald Trump but I don’t see that happening any time soon. That’s about as likely as him stringing together a coherent sentence. Probably best if we don’t hold our breath for that one.”
So please, if you know someone suffering from HG make sure you reach out to them. They probably won’t want help and there’s not much you can do anyway…but reach out. Let them know that you understand that what they’re going through is brutal. Just being acknowledged and having someone understand that it isn’t morning sickness could help them feel that little bit better.
